Community activities: Voting member, New York State HIV Prevention Planning Group; Racial Ethnic Committee; also worked with orphaned children living with HIV/AIDS in Lima, Peru and did volunteer work with fair trade distribution in Costa Rica.
My favorite thing to do in Rochester: I like visiting the various museums and parks when it is not cold!
What I’m reading now: Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed by Jared Diamond
Biggest challenge I’ve overcome: I have always wanted to hike the Inca trail to Machu Pichu in Peru and finally looked past my fear of heights and did it.
The best advice I ever received: Not to be afraid to assert myself, by a friend and mentor Ron Gonzalez.
Goal that I’m working on right now: Applying and getting into graduate school.
What I do to relieve stress: Relax with a hot cup of chai and read a book or magazine.
My favorite guilty pleasure: Dark chocolate gelato with hazelnuts from the Mona Lisa Café in Webster.
What people say about her: Eileen Torres, senior director of program operations at Agri-Business Child Development: “Yama is an exceptional young woman. She’s very service oriented, very committed to the greater Rochester community. She’s very good at preparing her ideas … gathering facts and opinions and research to support her point of view … She’s very personable and very unique.”
