Myrdna L. Vargas

Personal: 26; single.

Occupation: Chemical Process Engineer, Digital Printing Solutions (Materials Manufacturing) for Kodak.

Community activities: Mentor for Red Cross HYLDP (Hispanic Youth Leadership Development) program; MESH (Math, Engineering and Science for Hispanics) committee member; president of HOLA (Hispanic Organization for Leadership and Advancement) at Kodak; LLDP Steering Committee (marketing sub-committee); Kodak E-WeekVolunteer.

My favorite thing to do in Rochester: Eat at Sinbad's and take a walk on Park Avenue or go to Tapas for a night of dancing salsa!

What I'm reading now: Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi.

Biggest challenge I've overcome and how I did it: The biggest challenge I have overcome was during my first year as a fulltime professional where I had to work closely with a very abrasive co-worker. Her insecurity was deeply reflected in the way she worked with myself and others. At first, I did not know how to handle the situation and found it difficult to recognize her behavior, because I was in disbelief. Once I realized that I was the focus of negative energy, I began to learn how to work around it. I must say, that in situations of unfamiliar territory, friends and colleagues are invaluable — there is nothing like learning from someone else's experiences and using them to shape your own outcomes. I got through it and believe that I am a stronger and wiser because of it. The most trying times in life are often periods of great growth and serve to bring out the best in people.

Hard times in life can make things interesting and make you stronger, life might be boring otherwise and we wouldn't want that!

The best advice I ever received: Whatever challenges you face, just think clearly of what it is you are in control of and do all that you can to enable a positive outcome. Then don't worry about it, because it's out of your hands.

One thing I've always wanted to do but never have: Skydiving!

Something people don't know about me: I have one pinky shorter than the other. I was a little adventurous and curious even at a young age. In pursuit of an insect, I was playing with a window, when it accidentally closed on my left pinky- officially shortening it. I suppose it's a unique attribute.

What I do to relieve stress: Go to the gym and play with my nephew.

My biggest guilty pleasure: Edy's Chocolate Brownie Ice Cream and Chocolate, overall!

The one thing I can't live without: Hair mousse, music.

As I child, I always wanted to be: Lawyer/actress/singer- As the youngest, I had to fight for my cause quite a bit and was persistent at that. This ability was noted and it was suggested that I pursue law, even at a young age.

The song that best describes my life: "Soak up the Sun" by Sheryl Crow.

What people say about her: Carlos Perez, chairman of the board of HOLA: "She has very good poise and she's very centered. She has a good speaking style, which calms you down and makes you listen. She does a lot of work in the community. She's going back to school to get her MBA. It's amazing -- I don't know how she does it. People her age are usually just taking care of themselves, but she does a lot of things for others."
