Biggest challenge I’ve overcome and how I did it: Living with multiple sclerosis Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is very challenging. The unpredictability of MS has definitely taught me to appreciate the little things I know I took for granted pre-MS. What helps me “live” with MS is keeping a positive attitude which is nurtured by the love, strength and support I get from my partner, my friends, family and my faith. Prior to MS, I had to overcome many obstacles on my way toward accomplishing all that I have been able to do in my life. I was “the kid from the ’hood” (Spanish Harlem in New York City) who defeated all the odds to become the first college graduate in the family. I became a teacher, which is what I always wanted to be. I continued my education to earn my doctoral degree so that I could teach others to do what I loved to do —teach. Up through my high school years, teachers were the ones who made a difference in my life. They saw my potential and helped me believe in myself. I hope I can do the same.
One thing I’ve always wanted to do but never have: Travel to Alaska.
Something people don’t know about me: I trained for the 1980 Olympics in fencing.
The one thing I can’t live without: My partner and my dog.
The song that best describes my life: “I Will Survive,” by Celia Cruz.
Favorite guilty meal: Pizza and wings.
Favorite artist or musician: I have a very eclectic taste … I have different favorites in different categories.
Actress I’d like to portray me in a movie about my life: Jennifer Lopez or Halle Berry.
