Kristina Hutch Matthews

Personal: 40, married with two children.

Occupation: Artist and writer.

Community activities: Started up Ambassadors for the Earth (environmental education club for elementary aged kids), Pen and Ink instructor, Rochester Art Club Board Member, Member of the Penfield Art Association, founded RepARTee Alliance of Kindred Creatives and PTA board member.

My favorite thing to do in Rochester (or my favorite place to visit): I love to take my kids on bike rides and nature hikes in undiscovered places around Rochester. There are so many great trails that people don’t even know about!

Biggest challenge I’ve overcome and how I did it: I always have a lot of new ideas for projects and activities I want to try, and sometimes it is hard for me to decide where my focus should be. That can get overwhelming. I’ve found that by breaking each task down into smaller, less intimidating pieces, and just taking each moment as it comes, you can accomplish ANYTHING! I used the same approach to train for the Rochester Marathon.

One thing I’ve always wanted to do but never have: Write and publish a novel.

Something people don’t know about me: I often feel guilty about having so much, in a world where others struggle just to survive. I am in the process of creating a website that will be a clearinghouse of birthday party themes/ideas, with appropriate tie-in charities to which kids can donate their presents. We’ve done this the past few years for my daughters’ parties, and it gives them a really good feeling to use their birthday to help someone else.

The one thing I can’t live without: My art. It’s really like therapy for me; and it has taught me so much about myself.

The song that best describes my life: “Here I Go Again,” by Whitesnake.

Favorite guilty meal: Chocolate chip mocha frappucinos from Starbucks (but it has to be decaf, or else I’m just scary).

Favorite artist or musician: Artist - MC Escher, Musician - Jack Johnson.

Actress I’d like to portray me in a movie about my life: Evangeline Lilly.
