Lu Highsmith

Personal: 39; married with 4 children.

Occupation: writer, spoken artist, promoter, publisher and teaching assistant

Community activities: CSWA-Culture Starts With Art advocacy group, Rochester A.B.O.V.E.

My favorite thing to do in Rochester: It’s a tie between anything outdoors…Highland Park, Charlotte Beach, Webster Park, etc. or reciting poetry in front of any receptive audience (at churches, schools, coffee houses, clubs, nursing homes, festivals, book stores, etc.).

Biggest challenge I’ve overcome and how I did it: Balancing my family, education, career, spiritual development and community activism while striving to do them all in excellence. I am continuing to overcome this challenge by seeking guidance, direction, wise advice and by learning how to delegate as well as setting my pride aside to ask for help.

One thing I’ve always wanted to do but never have: Travel the world! But knowing me, I will make it happen sooner than later.

If I could change one thing about myself it would be: I never know how to answer this question. If I say nothing…I sound conceited. But if I rattle off a long list…I sound self-deprecating. I guess it would be that I tend to overthink things…like I’m doing with this question.

The talent I would most like to have: Playing an instrument. I consider myself to be a connoisseur of all genres of music but I simply don’t have the talent to play it. Luckily, I am surrounded by brilliant musicians everyday. I simply live vicariously through them.

The one thing I can’t live without: My cell phone. It is my lifeline to the people and the work that I love.

One of my favorite sayings is: Be the change that you want to see in others and in the world.

Actress I’d like to portray me in a movie about my life: Kimberly Elise -people either tell me I look like her, my voice sounds like hers or that we have similar spirits - whatever…I like her. She’s a great actress…she’s the only who I think comes close to capturing “the essence of Lu.”
