Personal: 46, of Penfield, married with two children, Megan, 11, and Mitch, 9.
Occupation: Vice president of business development for Vitalwork, an organizational development consulting firm. I spend my time helping companies increase profitability by unlocking the full potential of their workforce, converting passive, compliant employees into motivated, engaged leaders who enjoy being held accountable for their results. What a great job!
Community activities: Current board member and immediate past chair of Lifespan, a not-for-profit that helps older adults take on the challenges and opportunities of life; Leadership Rochester alumni; Girl Scouts.
My favorite thing to do in Rochester: Skiing with my kids is my favorite activity this time of year, and it reminds me of one of my proudest accomplishments — teaching my kids to ski at the tow-rope hill at Powder Mills Park. The set-up there is terrific — it’s cheap, easy to access, and very friendly for those of us who are trying to get our kids into the sport without killing them first as we struggle with their boots, gloves, poles, forgotten trips to the bathroom, etc. Without the simplicity of Powder Mills, I doubt that my kids would be skiing.
Biggest challenge I’ve overcome and how I did it: I’ve made two or three significant career changes, each of which felt like a huge leap of faith. When paralyzed with indecision, I always got the push I needed from one or more influencers — my mom, my husband, or a close friend perhaps — who would say: “You already know what you want to do; trust your instincts,” or “I trust your judgment; I think you should do it.”
One thing I’ve always wanted to do but never have: Have the courage to live overseas for a few years, including total cultural immersion — food, language, the works.
If I could change one thing about myself it would be: To stop the running monologue in my head at the end of each day about the things I “should” have accomplished, and instead focus on the things that I did accomplish.
The talent I would most like to have: The silly thing that comes to mind is being a gymnast. It’s embarrassing to think how often I’ve daydreamed about impressing my friends with a perfectly executed string of backflips and round-offs. In reality, I’m happy to just still be awake at the end of an episode of The Office.
The one thing I can’t live without: If we skip the automatic first response of “my family,” I would next list the pile of books next to my bed in various states of completion.
My favorite movie: Terms of Endearment.
One of my favorite sayings is: Assume positive intent.
A person who has inspired me (and why): Fran Weisberg, executive director of Finger Lakes Health Services Agency. If you’ve met her, you already know why. She radiates possibilities and positive energy, with a relentless focus on figuring out how to make our community better.
