Dr. Arlene Messer

Personal: 52, of Pittsford, married with two children.

Occupation: Dentist, owner and partner of Contemporary Dentistry.

Community activities: I try to get involved with school groups and love inspiring young people. Just last week, I visited Calkins Road Middle School for Career Day to talk to kids there about careers in dentistry. We also recently opened our doors to a group of sixth-6th grade girls from School 35 who are in an after-school group called LASS (Ladies Attaining Self-Sufficiency). We gave them dental exams and talked to them about how they could have a career in dentistry someday. In the past, I also have provided discount dentistry for children kids at St. Joseph’s Villa and have treated women from Alternatives for Battered Women at no charge.

My favorite thing to do in Rochester: Biking and walking on the canal path.

Biggest challenge and how I’ve overcome it: I overcame my fear of flying by meditation, spiritual reading and practice.

One thing I’ve always wanted to do but never have: Golf!

If I could change one thing about myself, it would be: To be more organized.

The talent I would most like to have: Singing.

The one thing I can’t live without: My books.

My favorite movie: My Fair Lady

One of my favorite sayings is: “A person is not one thing.”

A person who has inspired me and why: It’s not just one person. It’s all the incredible people I read about every day who volunteer, contribute and put themselves on the line for the sake of others.
